Technician as Lab Manager

Your mission :
The Thomä lab (https://www.thomalab.org) is going to move from the FMI in Basel to the EPFL in the fall of 2023. The laboratory is interested in the structure and function of large macromolecular machines in chromatin organisation, transcription and ubiquitination, and ways to develop novel therapeutics in oncology and beyond. To achieve these goals, we employ a wide range of techniques including structural, computational, cell biological and chemical biology approaches. Previous experience in any of these fields would be advantageous but is not a prerequisite. The position will be tailored to the experience and interest of the candidate, but will have a strong emphasis on assuring the efficient running of the laboratory.

Main duties and responsibilities include :
  • Coordinate maintenance and functioning of lab equipment
  • Ordering and stocking supplies
  • General lab organisation and record keeping
  • Serving as the lab’s general Biosafety Officer (BSO)
  • Maintain mammalian and insect cell cultures and support protein purification activities.
  • Experience with ÄKTA systems is a plus
  • Carry out biophysical measurements
  • Onboarding of incoming lab personnel, and together with the team train young scientists in both the theoretical and practical aspects of our research

Your profile :
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree or an apprenticeship certificate (Federal Certificate of Capacity or equivalent) in a relevant subject area, such as biochemistry, chemistry or life sciences. Applicants with a Master degree are encouraged to apply. We are a highly international and interdisciplinary team, and the position requires excellent communications skills in both English and French. Strong organisational and management skills are essential. The candidate will be able to work independently and has a high degree of flexibility. Positive attitude and proactivity will be necessary for the candidate to build personal interactions with co-workers and students.
